It’s the story of a kid who makes a bad mistake that nearly gets his whole village wiped out and then has to redeem himself by becoming a super-powered battle mage who loves dragons. Yet on the other hand, it has some actual depth and competence. On one hand, it’s almost, almost bordering the realm of stilted and doe-eyed writing that’s the bane of many bad fantasy novels. ![]() I’ve never felt as conflicted as a reader than with this book. Against, you’ve got to read this if you like fantasy. I listened to the audiobook of this (read by the author) and was blown away by the conversational language and gripping narrative. It follows Kinch, a semi-talented thief who’s tasked with escorting a small band of travelers up into giant country to perform a vital mission. ![]() ![]() It hit all the spots I’m looking for: A funny and likable main character, a whole lot of interesting worldbuilding, and a good balance between grit and grins. Without any preamble, let me just say that this is one of the absolute best fantasy books I’ve read in a long, long time. Time for another round of five books that I’ve read recently! We’ve got at least three must-read gems in here, so read on… The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman ![]() Stephen fry mythos review5/10/2023 ![]() The paperback comes in at 352 pages long and is a fairly quick read considering the engaging style (to be explored more in the in-depth part of the review). Mythos was written by Stephen Fry who, though best known for his acting, is a scholar of history and has written multiple other history books ( author’s website and Amazon profile with his other books). I had listened to some of Fry’s other narrated books (including an outstanding complete collection of Sherlock Holmes stories), and I knew I liked both his narration and his approach to storytelling. I found this book on an Audible sale, and I picked it up immediately. What does Mythos bring to the table? Can legendary actor and comedian Stephen Fry lend his voice to tell the myths in a way that elevates them above the myriad other collections? ![]() If you want to learn more about the Greek myths, accessing modern translations of the primary sources is not difficult, and mythology collections litter the discount sections of most bookstores. Modern Western culture is steeped in these myths with many words, phrases, and metaphors traveling from ancient Greece to modern English. ![]() Even if you are not a classicist, you have likely come across stories of the Greek gods and heroes. ![]() Leave the world behind audiobook5/10/2023 ![]() But in this rural area-with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service-it’s hard to know what to believe.Should Amanda and Clay trust this couple-and vice versa?
